Founded in 2015, Hound’s Tree is a New York winery run by thirty-year-old winemaker and Master of Wine candidate Alex Rosanelli, who draws inspiration from his West Coast viticultural experience and global understanding of winemaking.
Hound’s Tree’s estate vineyard is located at a coveted site along Oregon Road near Mattituck on Long Island. The vines are perched 100 feet above Long Island Sound, less than 1,000 meters from the bluff, and benefit from the region’s cool, maritime influence, with consistent airflow and deep, well-draining glacial-till soils.
Alex and his team tend the vines with lutte raisonnée – conscientious farming, promoting biodiversity and sustainably-minded practices to achieve the highest quality fruit each vintage. For select, small lot wines made using fruit from the Niagara Escarpment and Finger Lakes, Alex works with trusted growers who share his vision of highlighting the unique attributes of the place. Regardless of site, value is placed on purity of site, fruit expression, and texture.
The winemaking philosophy behind Hound’s Tree is balanced between expertise and measured exploration, with the aim of producing exceptional wines while fine-tuning nuanced variables. The wines are made in small lots between the winery in Brooklyn and the North Fork of Long Island.
Leveraging his diverse experience producing wine in New York, Oregon, and Los Angeles, Alex takes an individualized approach to creating each wine, each vintage. He pays homage to classic regions and styles but crafts bottlings that are uniquely Hound’s Tree through techniques that better reveal the true character of the terroir and variety.
Hound’s Tree wines express the fineness and elegance of New York state’s cool climate regions through their freshness, purity and mineral edge.
The 30-acre estate vineyard is planted with Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, with an average vine age of over 20 years. Small plantings of own-rooted Marsanne, Roussanne, and Nebbiolo were added in 2016.
Hound’s Tree crafts several ranges of wines that vary in style and complexity.
